A Family Visit Visa, also known as TT visa, is a type of visa granted to individuals who wish to visit family members, relatives, or friends residing or working in another country. A Family Visit Visa allows the applicant to enter the country for tourism or to visit relatives for a specific period of time.
The Vietnam Family Visit Visa is one of the types of visas issued to foreign nationals for entry into Vietnam to meet, visit, or participate in family-related activities that are not related to business or employment.

What is the validity of a Family Visit Visa?
According to the 2014 Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam, as amended in 2019, the validity period of a Family Visit Visa (TT visa) shall not exceed 12 months. The issuance of a TT visa is a condition that allows foreigners to be eligible for a temporary residence card valid for 3 years in Vietnam.
Who is eligible for a Family Visit Visa?
Currently, a Family Visit Visa is issued to two categories of people:
Case 1: Foreign nationals who are the parents, spouses, or children of Vietnamese citizens.
Case 2: Foreign nationals who are the spouse or children under 18 years old of a foreign national who holds a visa with certain types of permits:
- LV1 – A type of visa issued by Vietnam for individuals entering to work with important government agencies, including the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly, the Government, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuracy, the State Audit, ministries, ministerial-level agencies, government agencies, provincial or municipal Party Committees, People’s Councils, and People’s Committees of central-affiliated cities or provinces.
- LV2 – A type of visa issued by Vietnam for individuals entering to work with political-social organizations, social organizations, and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
- LS – A type of visa issued by Vietnam for foreign lawyers practicing law in Vietnam.
- ĐT1, ĐT2, ĐT3 – Investment visas issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam, with specific capital contribution requirements for each type.
- NN2 – A type of visa issued by Vietnam for heads of representative offices or branches of foreign businesses, cultural, economic, or other foreign organizations in Vietnam.
- NN1 – A type of visa issued by Vietnam for heads of representative offices or projects of international organizations or foreign non-governmental organizations in Vietnam.
- DH – A type of visa issued by Vietnam for individuals entering to intern or study in Vietnam.

Documents required for a family visit visa application (TT visa):
Case 1: If a Vietnamese national sponsors a foreign relative for a family visit visa to Vietnam while the relative is in Vietnam, the following documents must be prepared:
- 01 Application for a family visit visa, if the person being sponsored is abroad, they must fill out form NA3, if the person being sponsored is in Vietnam, they must fill out form NA5.
- 01 Passport of the person being sponsored. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have at least 2 blank pages. Note: If the person being sponsored is abroad, they must provide a copy of the passport with consular legalization. If the person is in Vietnam, they must bring the original passport.
- 01 Notarized copy of the sponsor’s legal documents
- 01 Certified copy of documents proving the family relationship with the sponsor, such as the birth certificate for children or parents, marriage certificate for spouses, household registration book, family certificate, etc.
Case 2: For foreigners who are holding a Vietnamese visa and sponsoring their family members to apply for a Vietnamese visit visa, the following documents are required:
- Application for a Vietnamese visit visa, where if the sponsored person is abroad, form NA2 must be completed; if the sponsored person is in Vietnam, form NA5 must be used.
- Passport of the sponsored person, which must be valid for more than 6 months and have at least 2 blank pages. Note: if the sponsored person is abroad, a certified copy of the passport must be provided; if in Vietnam, the original passport must be submitted.
- Certified copy of the sponsor’s passport and valid visa/residence card.
- Documents proving the family relationship, such as the birth certificate for children or parents, marriage certificate for spouses, household registration book, family certificate, etc. (These documents must be legalized and translated into Vietnamese with notarization as required).
- Documents from the sponsoring company where the sponsor is employed, including:
- Certified copy of the investment registration certificate or the certificate for establishing a representative office.
- Certified copy of the business registration certificate and tax registration certificate.
- A letter introducing the person who will complete the visa application procedures at the Immigration Department.
Procedures for Applying for a Visit Visa
For those in Case 1, the procedure is quicker and easier.
Step 1: Prepare and Submit Documents
The sponsor or the representative of the organization sponsoring the foreigner for a Vietnamese visit visa should prepare the complete set of documents as mentioned above and submit them to the appropriate authority for processing in their locality.
- Hanoi: Hanoi Immigration Department, 46 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi
- Ho Chi Minh City: Ho Chi Minh City Immigration Department, 337 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
- Provincial Immigration Department, where the sponsoring company is headquartered or where the Vietnamese sponsor has their permanent residence.
Once the documents are submitted, the applicant will receive a receipt with the date for collecting the result.
Step 2: Go to the Designated Location to Collect the Result
On the appointment date mentioned on the receipt, the sponsor or the representative of the sponsoring organization will bring the receipt to the location where they submitted the documents to collect the visit visa result. At that point, the foreigner will be allowed to stay in Vietnam under the family visit visa category.

Step 1: Submit Documents for an Entry Approval for Family Visit
You need to submit the prepared documents to apply for an entry approval for family visits. Make sure to submit the documents to the appropriate authorities in your area.
- Hanoi: Hanoi Immigration Department, 46 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi
- Ho Chi Minh City: Ho Chi Minh City Immigration Department, 337 Nguyen Trai Street, Nguyen Cu Trinh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
- Provincial Immigration Department, where the sponsoring company is based or where the Vietnamese sponsor resides.
Processing time is usually about 5 working days, after which the Immigration Department will issue the result.
Step 2: Scan the Approval Notice
Once the approval notice is issued, scan the entire document and send it to the sponsored individual abroad for the next step.
Step 3: Apply for the Visit Visa
The person being sponsored should bring the following documents: the passport used to apply for the entry approval letter; 02 4×6 passport photos with a white background; a printed copy of the entire entry approval letter; the application form for entry and exit from Vietnam. These documents should be taken to one of the following locations: the designated entry checkpoint in Vietnam or the registered Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate, to have the family visit visa affixed and complete the entry procedures into Vietnam under the family visit category.
