Extension of visa for foreign investors 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣
When foreign investors establish or contribute capital to a company operating in Vietnam, they are eligible for a visa or can apply for a temporary residence card to conduct long-term business activities in Vietnam. The visa granted to foreign investors is a time-limited visa. Therefore, when the visa expires, the foreign investor can choose to apply for a new visa or extend the existing one. The following article shares the procedure for applying for a visa extension for foreign investors.
Legal Basis for Visa Extension for Foreign Investors
- Circular No. 04/2015/TT-BCA provides detailed regulations on documents related to the entry, exit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam;
- Law No. 2014/47/QH13 on entry, exit, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam (2014);
- Law No. 51/2019/QH14 amending and supplementing several provisions of the Law on entry, exit, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam;
- The Investment Law 2020.
What is an Investment Visa?
An investment visa, or investment entry visa, is a type of visa granted to foreign investors to conduct business activities in Vietnam. According to the provisions of the 2019 Immigration Law, investment visas are divided into four types:
- Investment Visa ĐT1: Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with a capital contribution of 100 billion VND or more, or investing in prioritized sectors or areas determined by the government. This visa is valid for a maximum of 5 years.
- Investment Visa ĐT2: Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with a capital contribution ranging from 50 billion VND to less than 100 billion VND, or investing in encouraged sectors or areas for development as determined by the government. The ĐT2 visa is valid for no more than 5 years.
- Investment Visa ĐT3: Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with a capital contribution ranging from 3 billion VND to less than 50 billion VND. This visa is valid for a maximum of 3 years.
- Investment Visa ĐT4: Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign organizations investing in Vietnam with a capital contribution of less than 3 billion VND. The ĐT4 visa is valid for no more than 1 year.

Conditions for Investment Visa Extension
Foreign investors wishing to extend their investment visa must meet the following conditions:
- Required Documents:
- Investment certificate/Certificate of eligibility for capital contribution;
- Proof of capital contribution to the company’s account, such as a bank confirmation or the company’s financial report.
Additionally, some other conditions that investors must ensure include:
- The original passport must have at least 1 month of validity beyond the visa expiration date;
- The current investment visa has not expired;
- Temporary residence registration has been completed as per regulations;
- The investor is not subject to deportation from Vietnam.
Documents Required for Investment Visa Extension
To extend the investment visa, the investor must prepare the following documents:
- The foreign investor’s passport;
- Valid investment visa;
- Application form for visa extension (Form NA5);
- A copy of the temporary residence declaration, certified by the local police station (commune/ward/town);
- Documents proving the individual is an investor.
Procedure for Investment Visa Extension
Step 1: Prepare all required documents as listed above.
Step 2: Submit the application
The foreign investor can submit the application at the local Immigration Department or the Immigration Department’s head office:
- Hanoi Headquarters: 44-46 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
- Ho Chi Minh City Office: 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
Step 3: Receive the result
The investor will receive the result within 5 working days from the date the competent authority receives the complete and valid application.
Cost for Investment Visa Extension
According to Circular No. 25/2021/BTC regarding the fees for issuing and extending visas, including investment visas for foreign nationals, the following fees apply:
1️⃣ Single-entry visa: 25 USD/each.
2️⃣ Multiple-entry visa:
- Valid for up to 3 months: 50 USD/each;
- Valid for over 3 months to 6 months: 95 USD/each;
- Valid for over 6 months to 12 months: 135 USD/each;
- Valid for over 12 months to 2 years: 145 USD/each;
- Valid for over 2 years to 5 years: 155 USD/each.
3️⃣ Temporary residence extensions: 10 USD/each.
