CONDITIONS FOR QUALIFICATIONS WHEN APPLYING FOR A WORK PERMIT FOR FOREIGN TEACHERS
A Work Permit (WP) is a legal document issued by the Department of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs to foreigners working legally in Vietnam. Foreign teachers who wish to teach in Vietnam are required to apply for a Work Permit as a mandatory procedure. So, what are the qualifications needed for foreign teachers applying for a Work Permit? Qualifications for Foreign Teachers’ Work Permit Application in Vietnam
According to Article 9 of Decree 152/2020/ND-CP, the documents proving that a foreign teacher is qualified include: “A diploma issued by the competent authority that meets the standards set by the Education Law, Higher Education Law, Vocational Education Law, and the regulations on the organization and operation of foreign language and IT centers issued by the Minister of Education and Training.”
Qualifications for Foreign Teachers’ Work Permit Application
Under Clauses 4, 5, and 6 of Circular 21/2018/TT-BGDĐT, the qualifications required for foreign teachers applying for a Work Permit include:
- For IT Teachers:
- A diploma in IT at the college level or higher;
- A certificate for teaching IT.
- For Foreign Language Teachers (specific language types):
- A college diploma or higher;
- A certificate for teaching the foreign language.
- For Foreign Teachers Qualifying to Teach Foreign Languages:
- A college diploma in foreign language teaching or higher;
- A college diploma in foreign languages and a relevant teaching certificate;
- A college diploma or higher, with a foreign language proficiency certificate at level 5 or higher according to the Vietnamese 6-level foreign language framework (or equivalent), plus a relevant teaching certificate.
Work Permit Application Process for Foreign Teachers
Step 1: The business seeking to hire a foreign teacher must explain its need for foreign labor at least 30 days before the teacher is due to start work. Then, submit a request to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs for approval.
Step 2: Submit the application for the Work Permit, including the following documents:
- Application form for the Work Permit;
- Notarized copy of the passport;
- Document confirming the foreign teacher has no criminal record;
- Health check (either from abroad or in Vietnam);
- Notarized copy of the business’s registration certificate;
- Notarized copy of the teacher’s diploma.
If the teacher lacks a diploma, they must provide teaching certificates or confirmation of at least 3 years of teaching experience.
Step 3: The Ministry will process the application within 5 working days.
Step 4: The applicant will receive the result at the Ministry.
